What is Candida?
When we talk about ‘Candida’, we are usually talking about Candida overgrowth (sometimes known as Candida Related Complex). This is a condition where a certain yeast (Candida Albicans) begins to grow exponentially and dominate the other microorganisms in your gut. This can cause a number of different symptoms including recurrent yeast infections, headaches, joint pain, fatigue and inability to focus. It can also lead to other health problems like food allergies and asthma.
You might be surprised to learn that more than 70% of us have Candida Albicans present in our guts! However, not everyone is suffering from a Candida overgrowth. Why is this? Well, this nasty little yeast only starts to cause problems when the balance of our intestines is disturbed. This change in environment gives Candida just what it needs to grow and expand throughout our intestines.
Normally the Candida colonies are kept under control by your immune system. However, there are a total of 8 different risk factors that can change this delicate balance and allow the Candida colonies to expand. According to the Ultimate Candida Diet program, these risk factors include dietary choices, medication, lifestyle changes, your environment, and even your choice of contraceptive.
Possible Symptoms and Causes of Candida Overgrowth
If you believe that you are suffering from Candida symptoms, the first place to look is your diet. The modern Western diet is packed full of junk food, processed meats and soft drinks. What do all these have in common? Answer: A high sugar content. You might be surprised at some of the foods that contain ‘hidden’ sugars. For example processed meats often contain large quantities of sucrose, dextrose or corn syrup. This matters because Candida Albicans uses that sugar to grow and multiply.
Another possible cause of your Candida overgrowth might be antibiotics. While they can undoubtedly save your life, antibiotics can also lead to long term health problems. This is because they indiscriminately destroy all bacteria in your body, even the ‘good bacteria’ that live in your gut. As a result, they weaken your immune system and remove the most important part of your defense against Candida. This natural gut flora has developed in your body since the day you were born. Once it is lost, it can very difficult to get it back.
I’ve just given you a really brief summary of the first two possible causes of Candida overgrowth. If you would like to read about these in greater detail (and discover 6 more risk factors for Candida), you can find much more information in the Ultimate Candida Diet program.
